Judicial Branch Announces Plan to Complete the Rollout of Maine eCourts and eFiling by February 2027
Date: 3/5/2026
The Maine Judicial Branch announced today the implementation schedule of Maine eCourts and electronic filing (eFiling) in the remainder of Maine's trial courts, a transition that began in 2018 with the statewide Violations Bureau. Courts in Bangor and the Business and Consumer Docket "went digital," transitioning away from paper-based processes, for civil and family law cases in 2020. Courts in Androscoggin County, Oxford County, Franklin County, Kennebec County and Somerset County have also transitioned to the digital system for all case types. One of Maines busiest courthouses, the York Judicial Center in Biddeford, will make the switch for all case types beginning Monday, March 30, 2026.
Attorneys, government agencies (except law enforcement agencies), and parties who file more than six non-emergency cases in a calendar year, are required to eFile in courts that have implemented Maine eCourts. Self-represented parties are not required to eFile and can continue to file documents as they always have, in paper at the courthouse, by mail, or by email if filing a protection from abuse or harassment case.
Aroostook County district courts in Fort Kent, Houlton, Presque Isle, and Caribou, as well as both superior courts in Caribou and Houlton, (Judicial Region 8), will transition to Maine eCourts and eFiling on June 1, 2026. On July 27, 2026, all courts in Hancock and Washington counties (Judicial Region 7) will follow. All cases and dockets are included in these transitions.
The new Maine eCourts system also includes text reminders of court dates for all criminal defendants who provide their mobile telephone numbers to the court clerks.
We have an ambitious schedule for the rest of 2026 into early 2027, but we are excited to finally have all of our trial courts on our new digital system, said Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Valerie Stanfill. This system will help our courts serve the people of Maine in the 21st century far better than we could with a system based on paper files.
Presentation for Aroostook County Legal Professionals and Stakeholders
An integral part of the rollout of eFiling is robust training for legal professionals and other required filers in the weeks and months before launch. On Wednesday, March 18th, the Judicial Branch will be hosting its first webinar to give an overview of Region 8 implementation, upcoming training opportunities, and expectations in preparation for eFiling. Attorneys and other professional filers in Aroostook County are encouraged to attend.
