Justice of the Peace
The Maine Judicial Branch is seeking applications from persons interested in being appointed as a Justice of the Peace for the State of Maine.
Justices of the Peace review and rule on applications for search warrants, arrest warrants and emergency mental health petitions. They may also be involved in reviewing statements of probable cause in criminal cases where an individual has not yet been bailed.
Justices of the Peace are appointed by the Chief Judge of the Maine District Court and serve at the pleasure of the Chief Judge. Applicants must be currently licensed as a lawyer in Maine and cannot be employed by a prosecutor’s office or law enforcement agency. Applicants must be available and willing to work nights, weekends and holidays. Hours vary and are not guaranteed. Justices of the Peace are paid on a per action basis for work performed outside of normal business hours and are not state employees.
Interested applicants should submit a resume and a cover letter, (via email), describing why you are interested in such an appointment and your experience in the practice of law. Emails should be sent to Karen.G.Morin@courts.maine.gov.
